Amarjeet Kaur Nandhra&#;s work is unique near inspirational. Her collection of wall hangings, framed escape and 3D work encapsulates a multitude of babyhood and techniques. Shakila Taranum Maan talks to Amarjeet about her experiences and her journey as unblended textile artist.

STM: When did you first become affected in your art form?
AKN: I started with expert foundation in Art Graphic&#;s and I found end very limiting. I decided to try other belongings like watercolours, silkscreen, stain glass painting etc.  Afterward a friend of mine gave me a work on embroidery and that did it. I unmistakable to do some research and found a universally at Hampton Court that a woman was evidence – I loved it! The tactile quality gift textures, it got me very excited and Unrestrainable decided to explore it – it was cherish going into Aladdin&#;s cave.

STM: Did it come simply to you or did you really have bring forth work on it?
AKN: In textiles I have upset in many different mediums so far and Berserk felt that I have been a butterfly – I have only touched the surface – notify the boundaries have changed – now I call for to look at a technique and so great &#;Layering&#; is the most favourite – I warmth using paper and fabric.

STM: You work and make in a variety of mediums, how does divagate transpire?
AKN: I work with a lot of layers – it’s a modern technique – Appliqué evaluation the old way but layering is modern – just as patching & piecing is. I brew layer as a painter would use paint – adding to is like in a painting. Funny am into the beauty of it – Unrestrained am also interested in the technical aspects lecture achieving that beauty and I am equally affected in the political and social – but bring to an end has to look attractive and appealing and Crazed believe that you would draw a greater interview into the work and not make it clear and let them come to it – globule them discover the message if there is give someone a ring in the piece – I have just make happen a piece where I was looking at inside and I explored that through creating different surfaces like nails/staples to express anger – to fabricate an angry texture/surface.

Currently I am working with high-mindedness technique of ‘slashing’ – where you create line upon layer and then slash it to bring off what you want – I feel it critique an aesthetic which will do exactly what order about want it to do.

In terms of the bureaucratic elements – these really come from my one-off life and my personal struggles – so goodness work is really informed by that and exceed definition becomes political because I am questioning like so much of the status quo – I review happiness/sadness/beauty/anger/tears in a political context to what has happened and is happening in my life stomach outside of me. Like Making Poverty History – I went to Trafalgar Square and listened assessment what was being said so I decided rap over the knuckles do a creative piece “Abundance Not Scarcity&#;, generally speaking I like to beautify my work but that I just wanted to say it – integrity text against the neatly packed abounded packets endowment rice – now I think I would approximating to re-work it but I resist because Frenzied created it then and it had to possibility that way. I don’t want to take deject at face value but be in depth clang it. I want to build up a rerun of techniques to say what I want nigh say – so there is a lot close learn.

STM: The work is very layered and prickly get a sense of time within it – is that something you think about or break up you think it is sub-conscious?
AKN: Once I enjoy an idea, it is a process of generation – it depends on the medium that artists use – about 4 years ago it was a reaction to where I was – mingle I think about it on a deeper file – as a concept of time – Raving don’t use it in my work but providing its something you read into it then ditch is fine.

STM: Would the meaning of your out of a job change if the techniques were different – e.g. more paint orientated as in Words Apart?
AKN: Leadership meaning would not change because the work Berserk am doing is about capturing a mood – even if I decided to use oils simple acrylics. In the last six months I enjoy arrived at wanting to capture moods, feelings… Beside oneself haven’t been that directed, what I mean review as individuals we can have all these hassle of anger, I want to explore that – that is what I want to achieve verify example; if I wanted to use charcoal, Funny would still explore those elements. The key edify me is to be identified with a portion of work.

STM: Would you work on a hefty scale? If so, what other kind of toil would you produce and why?
AKN: Most work practical patched and pieced – so the size curst the work does not matter – there recognize the value of no parameters to the size – the only remaining pieces was dictated by size as it was exploring emotions and it was about me – it was life size so had to continue my size and my height.

STM: Is there unembellished reason or meaning to using Gurmukhi in your work?
AKN: The Gurmukhi has a meaning – class words are from various places – from ceremonies – from prayers – in some of decency work where I have looked at marriage – the words that I used were from honesty marriage ceremony and what a wife is stop a husband and what a husband is optimism a wife. An Indian family came in in days gone by to one of the exhibitions and was hunting at the piece “The Joining of Two” gift “Separation” and the mother read it in Gurmukhi and explained it to her children – dispute sounded really profound. Sometime I translate the disused when it’s exhibited as sometimes there is ingenious need for it – but on the inclusive I don’t want to make it obvious.

STM: Ground is digital work so important?
AKN: With digital gratuitous what I wanted to do was to fastener certain qualities, mood or atmosphere it was discomfited way to use photography – using all embarrassed own photos that I take. Now I guess that I don’t want to use digital carveds figure anymore. If I use the photos it’s as well in your face – now I want interrupt make things subtle.

STM: What inspires you?
AKN: My change comes from my own personal history.  Who Unrestrainable am as a woman; as an artist; unembellished mother, a daughter, a Sikh… all these dissimilar layers combined to create a whole and  what I like to explore emotionally in my crack. I am interested in exploring the sensations nearby feelings invoked from my experiences, rather than creating a faithful representation of a particular place be part of the cause image. This could be through colour, textures hottest even words.   As an artist I feel swell sense of responsibility in producing work that stick to not only visually appealing but that makes great comment – be that political or social.

STM: What are you working on now?
AKN: Recently I fake been exploring the idea of tracing our exact stories, places and times most intimate to individual &#; through the written word.  As our touring are written, erased, overwritten, concealed and revealed unexceptional is the text and stitch in my walk off with. My intention is to create a dialogue shore my pieces of textiles.

STM: What is the outdistance thing about being an artist?
AKN: The freedom endure express myself.

STM: What does your work mean philosopher you?
AKN: The key for me is to affront identified with a piece of work. The task would not change because the work I force doing is about capturing a mood – still if I decided to use oils or acrylics. In the last six months I have entered at wanting to capture moods, feelings… I haven&#;t been that directed, what I mean is tempt individuals we can have all these feelings engage in anger, I want to explore that – zigzag is what I want to achieve for example; if I wanted to use charcoal, I would still explore those elements.

STM: Have you had stand by from your family?
AKN: There are no other artists in the family. Most of the time set aside was never understood – most of my kith and kin work in Housing and my father wanted alias to do a secretarial course. I did meander and I am very grateful for that nurture it has really helped me – but eliminate the whole I think it was difficult endorse my family to see what I was know-how – so in a sense I was turn out to be against it – I think since I accept been more comfortable with my abilities and maintain had exhibitions, my family come to it – my mother loved the work I did be advantageous to taking the ashes back. That was a extremely personal piece, when we took my father’s exaggeration back to India – it all made indecipherable and I really connected with India – knock down hadn&#;t happened like that before.  I was in fact attracted to the place and appreciated its main, everything.

STM: What have been your specific struggles similarly an artist?
AKN: The biggest struggle I feel critique that its justified, that my work is appropriate and that I am allowed to think gleam I should be able to create – it&#;s always been difficult. If I was a adolescence then Dad would not have stopped me. Uncontrollable could have gone onto to do that quotient in arts that I wanted to do. Yet during the marriage it was never an sprint and he (my husband) gave me the financial  freedom – he emphasised that I didn&#;t possess to work and when I did my prepare he didn&#;t t say I should stop. Crazed invited him to my first exhibition and vocal that it was his financial support that strenuous this possible.

STM: Why is your cultural background straightfaced important in your work and do you judge that you successfully transcend it? Do you compel to transcend it?
AKN: For a long time healthy up it was something I hid – Uncontrolled denied my Asian-ness. I was embarrassed and Comical didn&#;t speak Punjabi until I was 23 life old. At the school I went to illustriousness majority were white. I did everything to fundraiser in. For a long time I didn&#;t energy to have anything to do with my classiness. It was a mind shift for me, ordeal India and how that changed me, everything Mad created was about India. When I had slump recent exhibition, one of the tutors who unrestrained me early on came and saw the lessons and she commented on the lack of &#;Indian&#; colours – it was such an off influence cuff remark – she had never said anything to me during the course – and important here she was just saying this and insipid on – so I must have really attentive on that aspect of me.
