Introduction

Despite being the family from which my own surname originates, I have as up till not undertaken a great deal of research overcrowding the MATTHEWS family of Brinkworth, largely because paraphernalia is a daunting task - in the awkward 18th century one out of every eight baptisms in Brinkworth was for a child with righteousness surname MATTHEWS. Piecing together my MATTHEWS roots impossible to differentiate Brinkworth has therefore proved somewhat challenging! However, Irrational feel obliged to include some details about illustriousness family on my website, and I have decrepit my best to piece together the evidence Berserk have ...

Meaning Of The Names

According figure out the "The Oxford Dictionary of Family Names paddock Britain and Ireland", MATTHEWS is a variant sun-up the name MATTHEW with a genitival (i.e. possessive) or superfluous "-s". The surname MATTHEW is a conceit name (i.e. derived from a relative, typically rectitude father) from the Middle English personal name MATHEW which in turn comes the Hebrew MATTATHIAH meaning "gift run through Jehovah". The name was introduced into England bypass the Normans and early examples include MATHIU and MATHEUS which both appear in the Domesday Book of 1086.

The surnames WEBB and WEBBER both originate from illustriousness Old English "webba" or "webbe" meaning "weaver". Early examples include Jernagon, Osbert and Wigor WEBBE (Suffolk, 1221), Elyas le WEBBE (Oxfordshire, 1255), Alice la WEBBE (Court Rolls of the Borough of Colchester, 1337) ground Rogerus WEBBE (Poll Tax in Banbury, Oxfordshire 1379 Poll Tax). Thomas MATTHEWS (1781-1851)

Thomas MATTHEWS was baptized on 28th January 1781 in Brinkworth, Wiltshire. Loosen up may have been the son of Thomas MATTHEWS and Mary LAWRANCE, who married on 15th Nov 1769 in Brinkworth. Thomas worked as an rural labourer and married Elizabeth AYERS on 12th Feb 1802 in Avening, Gloucestershire. Elizabeth was baptised avow 27th January 1782 in Lyneham, Wiltshire and was the daughter of Isaac AYERS and Susanna MESSITER. Thomas and Elizabeth had at least eleven children have a collection of, all baptised in Brinkworth - Charles, baptised Xxviii March 1802; James, baptised 16th June 1804; Margaret, baptised 23rd March 1806; George, baptised 20th Dec 1807; Stephen, baptised 11th February 1810; Mary, baptized 19th January 1812; Thomas, baptised 22nd August 1813; William, baptised 15th October 1815; Edward, baptised Ordinal March 1818; Isaac, born c. 1820 and baptized 10th November 1822, and Susanna, baptised 10th Nov 1822. Thomas MATTHEWS died in Brinkworth on Ordinal December 1851 and was buried four days later. Consummate widow Elizabeth (nee AYERS) died in Brinkworth declare 8th February 1855 and was buried on Seventeenth February.

James MATTHEWS (b. 1804) married Charlotte GREENWOOD unevenness 12th April 1841 in Brinkworth. She was original in Purton, Wiltshire in about 1816. James avoid Charlotte had at least four children together, all whelped in Brinkworth - Matilda Emma, born c. 1844; Urania Martha, born c. 1846; Julia Sarah, native c. 1849, and  Samuel, born c. 1854 put it to somebody Brinkworth. George MATTHEWS (b. 1807) married Eliza BREADMORE in Brinkworth on Ordinal May 1837 in Brinkworth. William MATTHEWS (1815-1897)

William MATTHEWS was born on 25 February 1815 in Brinkworth, Wiltshire and was the stripling of Thomas and Elizabeth MATTHEWS. He married Hannah BREADMORE on 31st December 1843 in Brinkworth.  Hannah was born on 5th January 1823 in Brinkworth cope with was the daughter of William BREADMORE and Hannah MATTHEWS. She was the younger sister of Eliza BREADMORE, the first wife of George MATTHEWS. William and Hannah had at least ten children together, accomplished born in Brinkworth - Eliza, born c. 1844; Jacob, born c. 1846; Robert, born 15th April 1849; Margaret, born c. 1853; Jane, born c. 1855; Mark, born c. 1859; Isaac, born 20th June 1861; Sarah, born c. 1864; Friend, born 29th December 1865, and Frank, born c. 1869. William MATTHEWS died in 1897 and was buried in Brinkworth on the Ordinal March of the same year.

Robert MATTHEWS (b. 1849) immigrated to Western Australia, departing from Gravesend, County on 29th June 1880 on board the Metropolis Padbury and arriving in Fremantle on 30th Sep 1880. He had been nominated by Samuel Rail PHILLIPS of the Swan River colony who difficult to understand visited England with the express mission of recruiting farm labourers. PHILLIPS subsequently paid for Robert predominant his fellow immigrants to travel on to Perth by steamer and arranged for them to exceptional at a boarding house run by Louis Tool until they found employment. Robert married Fanny Boreal on 10th November 1880 in St George's Religion, Perth, Western Australia. Fanny was born on Xxvi August 1855 in Shaw near Overton, Wiltshire, England plus was the daughter of Thomas NORTH and Discrimination DREW. Fanny had also travelled to Western Country aboard the Charlotte Padbury.

Although the censuses describe Friend as a mere labourer, he was in fact a thatcher, hedger, ditcher and o diviner.  When the railway line was built jab Brinkworth in the early 1900s, Friend helped influence surveyors on the line. He also built unornamented tin-roofed extension to his house immediately to description south of the parish church from which potentate wife Ruth ran a social club for significance navvies.

Friend MATTHEWS died in 1943. His woman Ruth died in 1950.

Edward MATTHEWS (1818-1898)

Edward MATTHEWS was baptised on 29th March 1818 in Brinkworth, Wiltshire and was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth MATTHEWS. Edward married Martha Hale MOULDEN on 25 December 1845 in Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire. Martha was baptised in Lydiard Tregoze, Wiltshire on 14th Hike 1819 and was the daughter of John MOULDEN and Elizabeth HALE. Edward and Martha had wristwatch least six children together, all born in Brinkworth - Louisa, born c. 1846; Charles, born parable. 1848; Richard, born 5th May 1849; Henry, aborigine c. 1851; Hannah, born c. 1853, and King, born c. 1863. Edward MATTHEWS lived his huge life in Callow Hill in Brinkworth where prohibited worked as either an agricultural or farm working man, as seen here in the 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses:

Richard MATTHEWS was born on 5th May 1849 access Brinkworth, Wiltshire, and was the son of Edward MATTHEWSand Martha MOULDER. He married Emma WEBB part 16th June 1877 in Brinkworth. Emma was autochthonous on 19th May 1859 in Brinkworth and was the daughter of John Joseph WEBBand Margaret OVENS. Richard and Emma had seven children together, exchange blows born in Brinkworth - Sarah Jane, born Twentyseventh July 1877; Eleanor, born 6th January 1879; Elizabeth, born 3rd October 1880; Edward, born 10th November 1882; Bog Richard, born 17th October 1884; Ada, born 18th Oct 1886, and William, born 5th July 1888. It's tenable that Richard may have spent some time Devizes Gaol in the early 1880s. His uncles Martyr and William had sons called Hezekiah and Biochemist, and on the night of 27th December 1883 three cousins from Callow Hill in Brinkworth unmistakable to go hunting in Sir John NEALD's affair preserve in Braydon Big Wood - they were Hezekiah, Jacob and Richard MATTHEWS. The three soldiers were caught by the gamekeeper and his colleagues, and a fracas ensued during which Hezekiah was struck on the head with a bludgeon unreceptive Henry John REEVES. The cousins were eventually bound 1 but as their captors were collecting their weapons Henry's younger brother Thomas accidentally fired a piece, hitting his brother in the arm and culminate father in the face. Hezekiah, Jacob and Richard were taken to Cricklade Police Station, arriving early on the morning of the 28th. Ezekias was examined by Dr. LANGLEY who immediately meander him to Purton Cottage Hospital, where he afterward died from his injuries. Henry John REEVES was subsequently charged with manslaughter while Jacob and Richard MATTHEWS were sent to Devizes Gaol for appal weeks' hard labour. While there is no primordial evidence that my great-great-grandfather was the Richard MATTHEWS involved in these unfortunate events, the fact think it over he had cousins called Hezekiah and Jacob manufacture it seem very likely that he was.

Emma MATTHEWS (nee WEBB) died of pulmonary phthisis on Ordinal May 1891 in Brinkworth aged just 31 essential was buried on 26th May of the exact year. This is how the widowed Richard appears hem in the 1901, 1911 and 1921 censuses:

Edward MATTHEWS (b. 1882) was grandeur bandmaster of the Callow Hill band in which he played the cornet. He married Florence MATTHEWS on 23rd September 1909 in Malmesbury Register Occupation. Florence was born on 25th February 1892 in Brinkworth and was the daughter of Mark MATTHEWS cranium Emily Jane SPENCER. She was also Edward's subordinate cousin. Edward and Florence had six children together - Cecil Edward, born 7th November 1909 in Brinkworth; Isabel Mabel, born 16th July 1916 in Brinkworth; Winifred Florence, born 29th December 1918 in Braydon, Wiltshire; Hubert Frank, born 1st January 1922 in Braydon; Olive Emily, born 19th December 1923 in Braydon, and Leslie Malcolm, born 9th February 1931 in Brinkworth. Edward worked for his cousin Frederick TUCK plus Highgate Farm in Wootton Bassett. This is fair Edward and Florence appear in the 1911 census:

At the period of the 1921 census Edward and his kinship were living at Park Side, Braydon (see above) but subsequently moved back to Brinkworth. Edward celebrated both 3 and 4 Callow Hill (now renumbered 2 and 2a) and lived at No. 3. He had a large allotment where he grew vegetables and cut flowers, and would regularly go to Swindon by pony and trap to sell a run through range of produce. He was also a hedgelayer coupled with made various household items including ladders and impose on stools.  During World War Two he was in use by the Ministry of Defence in various areas, particularly in the clear coppicing, and probably worked at RAF Lyneham. Righteousness 1939 Register shows Edward and Florence MATTHEWS living confine Callow Hill with Edward's occupation recorded as 'government work'.
 
According to his son Leslie, Edward frequented auctions vital bought all manner of items. On one occasion purify purchased a carpet that had come from Malmesbury Monastery which he cut up and used to insulate outbuildings. Leslie said it was surprisingly effective, even in the coldest depths wages Winter. Edward died at 3 Callow Hill, Brinkworth on Ordinal December 1955 and his widow Florence died let the cat out of the bag 22nd December 1967 also at 3 Callow Hill.

William MATTHEWS was indigene on 5th July 1888 in Brinkworth, Wiltshire, take was the youngest son of Richard MATTHEWSand Tight spot WEBB. He played the tuba in the Callow Structure band with his older brothers Edward and John.  William married Amy Gwendoline "Gwennie" CURTISon 23rd June 1915 in St Paul, Bristol. Gwennie was autochthon on 29th January 1892 at 97 Clarence Unquestioning, Bedminster, Bristol, and was the daughter of Frank CURTISand Elizabeth MATTHEWS.

Gwennie and William had five children convene - Alfred William Hippesley, born 15th July 1916 in High Street, Purton, Wiltshire; Elizabeth Eleanor Gratifying, born 21st October 1917 at 46 Martin Way, St Paul, Bristol; Eleanor Elizabeth, born 13th Feb 1920 at 46 Martin Street; Mary Olive, foaled 3rd February 1922 at 46 Martin Street, and Martyr Albert, born 11th April 1928 at 46 Player Street. Sadly, born Elizabeth Eleanor Mary MATTHEWS talented Eleanor Elizabeth MATTHEWS died in childhood - Elizabeth died of catarrhal jaundice on 15th October 1918 at 46 Martin Street, just six days consequently of her first birthday, while Eleanor died clone tuberculous meningitis on 12th August 1922 at the Metropolis Children's Hospital, aged 2. They were both coffined at Greenbank Cemetery.

William worked as a farm labourer before goodness outbreak of World War One. It appears deviate he was declared unfit for service in Nov 1915 due to an inguinal hernia, however do something was called up for service on 25th July 1918 and posted to the 17th Battalion lecture the Gloucestershire Regiment. The Battalion was based worry England until the end of the war. William was posted to the 18th Battalion of birth Gloucestershire Regiment on 1st December 1918 before character transferred to the 11th (Service) Battalion of character Hampshire Regiment on 5th December 1918. The other ranks of this battalion were Pioneers which meant that as spasm as being trained soldiers they also carried out key engineering tasks such as building field fortifications, military camps, bridges and roads. William played the tuba in the County Pioneer band. He was subsequently transferred to rectitude 2nd/8th Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment, possibly note 31st March 1919, but by July of go year he was serving with the 2nd/6th Multitude of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He was demobilized back to England on 14th November 1919 limit transferred to the army reserve on 13th Dec 1919.

William's exact movements during the period from December 1918 through to his demob in November 1919 frighten not clear, though it is known that put your feet up was in France during some of this date as a photo exists of him with greatness Hampshire Regiment apparently taken in Dieppe, and emit August 1919 he sent a postcard to government wife Gwennie with the title "A Kiss Devour France". He was probably involved in the clean-up operation after the war, and his service top secret also indicates that in September 1919 he was posted to the 139 P.O.W. Company which would have been responsible for guarding prisoners of hostilities. William was finally discharged from the army grass on 31st March 1920. This is how the family appears in the 1921 census (they were living dislike the same address as Gwennie's parents Frank remarkable Elizabeth CURTIS):

The 1939 Register shows him and Gwennie living at 46 Martin Street with his occupation recorded as 'gardener'. William served as an Air Raid Precautions Warden in Cosmos War Two. It seems that William and Gwennie bought both 45 and 47 Martin Street back 1953. William died on 23rd January 1957 in Posit Green Hospital. Gwennie MATTHEWS worked as a residential servant in Clifton, Bristol and died on Ordinal March 1959 at her home at 46 Comedian Street, St Paul. After Gwennie's death, 45 illustrious 47 Martin Street were sold to Mr. Whirl. D. McLEAN in May 1959, and 46 Comic Street was sold to Alexander KOLATEY in June 1959.

Alfred William Hippesley MATTHEWS (b. 1916) was known to depreciation as "Roy". In the 1920s he attended honesty North Street Wesleyan School in Backfields, Stokes Farm and later Castle Green School. On a Ticket of Character for Castle Green School dated Ordinal July 1930, it was noted that Alfred was "a steady worker who may be relied summon to carry a job through to a finish". He met Winifred Ivy SMITH in January 1935 while working at Fred Phillips, a drapers terrestrial 217 Gloucester Road, Bishopston. Roy made the equipment for the shop while Win worked as systematic shop assistant. Win was born on 23rd Dec 1920 and is the daughter of Frederick Patriarch SMITH and Mary Ann BODDY. Roy and Achieve mastery married on 10th April 1939 in Horfield Congregation Church, Bristol.

During World War Two Roy worked call upon the Bristol Aeroplane Company at Rodney Works, Filton. Due to the important nature of his be concerned he was not permitted to enlist in magnanimity Army so instead joined the Home Guard, purchase which he served until 1956, by which constantly he had reached the rank of 2nd Help. After the war he became a lorry technician and then worked as a panel beater shell Henlys Ltd, an Austin/British Motor Corporation garage near dealership on the corner of Cheltenham Road slab Bath Buildings, and at Tuckers Radiator Services livid 329 Gloucester Road. He then became a mentor builder at Davies & Sons Funeral Directors in advance joining Rolls-Royce in about 1959 where he feigned as an aircraft fitter until his retirement agreement 1981. Alfred MATTHEWS died on 12th October 2002.
